Abstract Biomembrane-coated nanotechnology is a new biomimetic strategy for nanosystems. In this strategy, various kinds of biological membranes with versatile characteristics are used as functional materials and engineered on the surface of drug-loaded nano cores, which avoids the cumbersome process of traditional chemical methods to modify nanoparticles. Benefit from the camouflage function of biological membranes, the mimetic nanoparticles obtain the natural properties of the original biomembrane with good biocompatibility and characteristics of long circulation and lesion targeting. In the past few years, such biomimetic nanosystems have been successfully applied in drug delivery, showing broad application prospects in the fields of accurate diagnosis and treatment of diseases. This paper reviews the research progress of biomimetic nanoparticles in drug delivery system and prospect the future research.
