Abstract The number of patients with heart failure is increasing rapidly, and the mortality rate is high, and clinical lack of reliable prognostic indicators of disease. Cardiac power output (CPO) is the work done by the heart per unit of time, which is a direct indicator of cardiac function, including peak CPO, reserve CPO and resting CPO, and can be used to guide the treatment of heart failure and evaluate the prognosis. Peak CPO and reserve CPO are independent predictors of short-term and long-term prognosis in patients with stable heart failure respectively, while resting CPO is more suitable for patients with severe heart failure who cannot measure peak CPO. There is no consensus on the measurement method and reference range of CPO. Further study on the application of CPO in heart failure can provide new ideas for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with heart failure. This article reviews the research progress of CPO in the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure.
