| Survey on the status quo of social support, burden and coping style of the main caregivers of elderly chronic disease patients at home |

Abstract Objective To investigate the current status of the main caregivers’ social support, the burden of the main caregivers, and coping styles of elderly patients with chronic diseases at home and to explore the mechanisms of action of the three. Methods From January 2018 to December 2019, 226 cases of main caregivers of elderly patients with chronic diseases at home in Hunan Province People’s Hospital were selected, and they were investigated by self-made general questionnaire, social support rating scale, Zarit caregiver burden scale and characteristic coping styles. Data were analyzed by IBM SPSS Statistics 19.0 and Amos 22.0. Results The total score of social support for main caregivers of elderly patients with chronic diseases at home was (38.65±2.72) points, and the total score of care burden was (51.27±3.11) points, both of which were at a moderate level, and passive coping styles were more active. The total score of caregiver burden was negatively correlated with positive coping (r = -0.604, P ＜ 0.01), positively correlated with negative coping (r = 0.206, P ＜ 0.01), and negatively correlated with social support (r = -0.647, P ＜ 0.01). Positive coping was positively correlated with social support (r = 0.641, P ＜ 0.01), and negative coping was negatively correlated with social support (r = -0.227, P ＜ 0.01). The total effect of social support on the burden of caregivers was 0.336, of which the direct effect was 0.041. Conclusion Strengthen research on the main caregivers of elderly patients with chronic diseases at home, optimize the social support structure, establish positive coping styles, reduce the burden of care, and further improve the quality of life of caregivers of elderly patients with chronic diseases at home.
