Abstract Objective To discuss the research progress, hot spots and development trends of brown adipose tissue (BAT). Methods Based on the database of “Web of Science core collection”, the published literatures on BAT related studies from 2014 to 2020 were retrieved by using the related entries of subject = “Brown Adipose Tissue”. Bibliometrics analysis method and CiteSpace 5.7.R1 software were used to conduct visual analysis on the publication year, major countries / regions, institutions, journals and keywords. Results In this study, a total of 3089 literatures related to BAT were included; the country with the highest number of publications is the United States (1194). A total of 132 academic institutions participated in the research, with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Harvard Medical School in the United States publishing the most papers. BAT studies have been published in 718 open academic journals, the number of publications was topped by Scientific Reports (127 papers). The authors’ contribution was more prominent was PATRICK CN RENSEN etc., obesity, gene expression, thermogenesis and adipose tissue were the main focus of BAT research. Conclusion Research on BAT is increasing year by year, mainly distributed in Europe, the United States and Asia, and the research content focuses on the field of metabolic and endocrine diseases.
