Abstract Objective To investigate the expression levels of interleukin -17 (IL-17) and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1) in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) in patients with chronic periodontitis, in order to explore the role of both in the development and progression of chronic periodontitis. Methods From June 2015 to May 2017, 42 patients with chronic periodontitis diagnosed in Department of Stomatology of the First People's Hospital of Yibin were selected as the subjects. They were divided into moderate and severe chronic periodontitis group (group A, 22 cases) and mild chronic periodontitis group (group B, 20 cases) according to the oral condition. Another 20 patients who had periodontal health at the same period were selected as control group. The plaque index (PLI), bleeding index (BI), diagnostic depth (PD), bleeding (BOP), probing depth (PD), loss of attachment (AL) and levels of IL-17 and TGF-β1 in gingival crevicular fluid were detected. Results There were significant differences in the levels of PD, BOP, BI, PLI and amount of GCF in the groups (P < 0.05). The levels of IL-17 in gingival crevicular fluid of group A and B were higher than that of control group (P < 0.05). The level of IL-17 in gingival crevicular fluid of group A was higher than that of group B (P < 0.05). The level of TGF-β1 in gingival crevicular fluid of group B were higher than that of control group and group A(P < 0.05). The level of TGF-β1 in gingival crevicular fluid of group A was lower than that of control group(P < 0.05). The amount of GCF and the level of IL-17 in gingival crevicular fluid were positively correlated with the levels of PD, AL, BOP, BI and PLI (r=0.712-0.869, P < 0.05). The levels of TGF-β1 in gingival crevicular fluid were negatively correlated with PD, AL, BOP, BI and PLI in patients with chronic periodontitis (r=-0.702--839, P < 0.05); the levels of IL-17 in gingival crevicular fluid were negatively correlated with TGF-β1 levels in patients with chronic periodontitis (r=-0.817, P < 0.05). Conclusion The expression of IL-17 is closely related to the occurrence and development of chronic periodontitis, and it can reflect the extent of periodontal tissue destruction. TGF-β1 may play an immunosuppressive role in local tissues of chronic periodontitis.
