Abstract Momordica charantia L. is a traditional Chinese medicine with the same origin as medicine and food, which gets its name because of its unique bitter taste. Momordica charantia L. has a peculiar shape and rich nutritional value. It has been widely planted for hundreds of years since it was introduced into China, and it is loved by people as food and medicine. Pharmaceutical chemical studies show that the chemical components of Momordica charantia L. mainly include polysaccharides, proteins and peptides, saponins, flavonoids and phenolic compounds, which have different biological activities. Momordica charantia L. is used to treat a variety of diseases in traditional medicine in many countries. Modern pharmacological studies have also confirmed that Momordica charantia L. has a wide range of pharmacological effects, and the related mechanism is being studied in depth. The food and drug industry chain of Momordica charantia L. is also expanding. This paper will summarize the medicinal and edible value of Momordica charantia L. in order to provide a theoretical basis for the rational development and utilization of Momordica charantia L..
