Abstract Pruritus is the most prominent clinical symptom of atopic dermatitis (AD), presenting a significant circadian rhythm, with the aggravation of nocturnal pruritus. The treatment of nocturnal pruritus is an important basis for the control of AD. Biological clock is a biological rhythm with a cycle of about 24 h in physiology or behavior. At present, many studies have shown that the clock is closely related to the aggravation of nocturnal pruritus in AD. These studies suggest that clock gene can induce interleukin-33 to activate mast cells by regulating the expression of ST2 receptor, which plays an important role in regulating skin barrier function, hormone secretion level, mast cell activation and inflammatory mediators release, rather than a simple concept of time. This review aims to understand the biology of allergy related to time, and provide new ideas for the treatment of clinically refractory AD at nocturnal pruritus.
