Abstract Objective To explore the curative effect of meditation intervention on cognitive function in patients with residual schizophrenia. Methods From January to April 2019, sixty patients with residual schizophrenia were recruited from Shanghai No.1 Civil Administration Mental Health Center who had been hospitalized in for a long time. The patients were divided into control group and meditation group by random number table method. The control group (n = 30) received conventional treatment, and the meditation group (n = 30) received meditation intervention for 8 months in addition to conventional treatment. Cognitive function and psychotic symptoms were assessed before admission and at the end of 8 months after treatment with the repeatability battery for the assessment of neuropsychological status (RBANS) and the brief psychiatric rating scale (BPRS) assesses psychotic symptoms. Results After intervention, the total scores of immediate memory and RBANS in the meditation group were higher than those before intervention, and the total scores of immediate memory, visual span, speech function and attention in the meditation group were higher than those in the control group, with statistical significances (P < 0.05). After intervention, the total score of BPRS scale, anxiety and depression, inactivity, activation and hostile suspicion in the meditation group were lower than those before intervention, and the total score of BPRS scale, anxiety and depression, inactivity and activation scores in the meditation group were lower than those in the control group, the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion Meditation intervention on the basis of conventional treatment for patients with residual schizophrenia can improve cognitive impairment and psychotic symptoms, and promote rehabilitation.
