Abstract Objective To investigate the application of problem-based learning (PBL) teaching method with WeChat platform in the standardized training for pediatric surgery residents. Methods From 2017 to 2018, 30 medical students major in pediatric surgery were enrolled in this study. According to the random number table, they were divided into the experimental group and the control group, with 15 students in each group. The experimental group adopted PBL teaching method based on WeChat platform for teaching; the control group adopted traditional classroom teaching methods. The two groups were investigated by questionnaire and the teaching effect was analyzed. Results The scores of learning interest stimulation, self-learning ability improvement and teamwork spirit in the experimental group were higher than those in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (all P < 0.05). The ratio of students in a dominant position, high learning pressure, self-study ability improved obviously and significantly improve ability to analyze the problems, problem solving skills improved obviously, more harmonious interpersonal relationship, language expression ability improve, continue to implement the PBL teaching of the experimental group were higher than those of the control group, and the ratio of learning content integrity was lower than that of the control group, the differences were statistically significance (all P < 0.05). Conclusion The application of PBL teaching method with WeChat platform in the standardized training of pediatric surgery residents can effectively improve the students’ clinical thinking and decision-making ability, expression and communication ability, and ultimately improve the students’ clinical work ability, which meets the development needs of the standardized training of modern pediatric surgery residents.
