Abstract Insomnia refers to the inability to fall or stay asleep leading to a serious decline in social function during the next day. At present, physiological insomnia was mainly caused by brain gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurons system dysfunction, hyperactivity of hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis (HPA axis), melatonin (MT) secretion decline, cytokines secretion disorders and different degree expression of some specific neurotransmitters. In result of central nervous system dysfunction which leading to the occurrence of insomnia. This article summarized the pathogenesis of physiological insomnia the aspect above, aiming to provide new methods to treat insomnia.
