Abstract Objective To review the current status of acupuncture treatment of premature ovarian failure (POF) in the past six years. Methods The China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) Database, Wanfang Data, CQVIP, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science were retrieved from the time of January 2015 to April 2020. A randomized controlled trial of acupuncture as the main intervention for the treatment of POF was included. The retrieved documents were screened, data information extraction and database establishment were performed. The data information mainly included diagnostic criteria, intervention means, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome, meridian selection, acupoint frequency, random allocation scheme, treatment course. Results The use of diagnostic criteria on randomized controlled trials of acupuncture for POF lacks uniformity and standardization. The most common treatment method was acupuncture therapy combined with drug therapy. The main TCM syndrome types were kidney deficiency, liver depression and kidney deficiency. The acupoints belonged to the bladder meridian of Zutaiyang, the kidney meridian of Zushaoyin and the conception channel were the most used. The treatment course varied greatly. Conclusion At present, acupuncture treatment has significant effect on POF. However, many aspects of clinical design are still defective, which affects the credibility of clinical conclusions. All of these need to be improved in future clinical research.
