Abstract Objective To describe the mental health status of parents of children with phenylketonuria (PKU) and to provide background information for the development of relevant intervention strategies. Methods From December 2014 to December 2016, a total of 76 parents of children with PKU (the main guardians of the parents) who were admitted to Tangshan Maternal and Child Health Hospital were selected as the research objects, while symptom check list 90 (SCL-90) was used to evaluate the psychiatric symptoms of the children′s parents and compared them with the national norm. Results The total mean score of SCL-90 symptoms of children′s parents was higher than that of the Chinese norm, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The score results of all dimensions showed that the parents of children with PKU score in compulsive, depression, anxiety, phobia, paranoia, and psychosis were significantly higher than those of the Chinese norm, and the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). In addition, the positive and negative item scores in the parents of children with PKU were higher than those in the Chinese norm, and the difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). The comparison of the SCL-90 scores of parents of children with PKU in different situations showed that the total average score of SCL-90 were higher than those with younger age, mothers, lower educational level, and lower monthly household income, and the differences were statistically significant (P < 0.05). Conclusion The degree of abnormality of 90 symptoms of the parents of children with PKU is significantly higher than the national norm. The main abnormalities are concentrated in the mental and psychological fields. Parents with younger parents, lower education level, and lower monthly family income have higher levels of mental abnormalities.
