Abstract Objective To explore the mediating effect of job burnout on palliative nursing cognition level and nursing attitude of oncology nurses. Methods From March to October 2019, a total of 380 registered nurses from the department of oncology in 3 specialized hospitals and 6 general hospitals in Shaanxi Province were investigated by means of general information questionnaire, palliative care knowledge questionnaire, Maslach burnout questionnaire and Bradley nursing attitude questionnaire. Results A total of 380 questionnaires were actually issued and 365 valid questionnaires were collected, with an effective recovery rate of 96.1%. Palliative care knowledge score of oncology nurses was (11.04±2.16) points; the score of burnout was (72.62±4.16) points. Nursing attitude score was (31.91±5.86) points. There was a negative correlation between job burnout and cognitive level of palliative care (r = -0.601, P < 0.01). There was also a negative correlation with nursing attitude (r = -0.626, P < 0.01). The mediating effect of job burnout between the cognitive level of palliative care and nursing attitude was 0.138, accounting for 17.3% of the total effect, and the mediating effect was significant (Z = 5.625>1.96). Conclusion Oncology nurses are at a high level of job burnout, and their job burnout plays a part of the mediating effect between the cognitive level of palliative care and nursing attitude. Hospitals can improve nurses′ palliative care attitude towards patients by improving their cognitive level and reducing their sense of job burnout.
