Reconstruction of the anterior talofibular ligament and strengthening of the retinaculum extensorum in the treatment of chronic lateral ankle instability |

Abstract Objective To evaluate the clinical effect of small incision reconstruction of the anterior talofibular ligament combined with extensor support band enhancement in the treatment of chronic anterolateral instability of the ankle joint. Methods A total of 42 patients with chronic ankle instability from January 2016 to June 2018 were collected from the 900th Hospital of Joint Logistics Support Force. After ankle arthroscopy was conducted, reconstruction of the anterior talofibular ligament through a small incision and reinforcement of the extensor support band were performed. Preoperative and postoperative ankle function scores were compared to evaluate the therapeutic effect of this operation. Results The postoperative ankle functional scores of 42 patients was significantly higher than that before surgery, and the difference was highly statistically significant (P < 0.01). No recurrence of ankle instability was found during the follow-up period, and no patient still felt unstable after chief complaint. Conclusion Anterior talofibular ligament reconstruction and extensor band reinforcement can improve ankle instability, reduce the recurrence of ankle instability, and improve the function of ankle. It is an effective operation to treat lateral ankle instability.
