Effects of Icariin on the expression of β-catenin, ALP and RUNX2 in osteoblasts |

Abstract Osteopenia is caused by the loss of bone mass when bone formation guided by osteoblasts is less than the bone absorption induced by osteoclasts. According to the traditional Chinese medicine, herba epimedii can treat osteoporosis. Besides, studies have shown that Icariin, the characteristic component of herba epimedii can promote bone formation, improve the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and also up-regulate the expression of key factor beta-catenin, ALP and runt-related transcription factor 2 of osteoblast. However, Icariin has different effects on the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts. Therefore, Icariin has an attractive prospect in clinical treatment of osteoporosis, but its mechanism needs further study.
