Abstract Spinal tuberculosis is a localized manifestation of tuberculosis in the osteoarticular system. Antituberculosis medication alone often results in neurological dysfunction and kyphosis. Surgery is the ultimate treatment for spinal tuberculosis. Thorough removal of lesions and reconstruction of spinal stability are fundamental strategies for surgical treatment of spinal tuberculosis. At present, there is no uniform standard surgical guideline, and the choice of surgical approach is still controversial. This article reviews the surgical treatment of thoracolumbar tuberculosis, in order to improve the understanding of the disease.
