Abstract As a new type of corneal refractive surgery, femtosecond laser small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) is popular among patients and surgeons because of its advantages of flapless, microinvasive, security, accuracy and stability. It becomes one of the mainstream operations of refractive surgery. At the same time, the corneal stromal lenticulere, which moved during the SMILE, has been found to be used in the treatment of diseases, such as keratoconus and hyperopia, as well as corneal stromal lenticule autoimplantation, lamellar keratoplasty, corneal stromal lenticule punctual plug, which has a unique clinical extension. However, SMILE still has some shortcomings, such as narrow application scope and limited retreatment. It needs further development and improvement. This article reviews both advantages, disadvantages and development status of SMILE treatment for myopia, astigmatism and hypermetropia, by comparing other methods of corneal refractive surgery.
