Abstract Objective To investigate the effects of multiple infections and viral load on the severity of respiratory infections in children. Methods A retrospective analysis of 97 children with respiratory infections who were treated at the Jiangjin Central Hospital of Chongqing from December 2017 to December 2018 was carried out. All children were divided into three groups: mild group (n = 72), moderate group (n = 15) and severe group (n = 10) infections according to the severity of disease. All patients underwent respiratory pathogen screening, and the differences in general conditions, symptoms, infections, complications, visits, laboratory-related indicators, and viral load were compared among the three groups. The risk factors that affect the condition of the child were analyzed. Results The multiple infection rate, procalcitonin (PCT) and total viral load in the severe group were significantly higher than those in the other two groups. The multiple infection rate, PCT and total viral load in the moderate group were significantly higher than those in the mild group (P < 0.05). PCT (OR = 4.951, 95%CI: 1.005-9.473, P = 0.003) and multiple infections (OR = 1.731, 95%CI: 8.782-122.363, P < 0.001) were independent risk factors affecting the severity of disease. Conclusion PCT and multiple infections are independent risk factors for the severity of disease in children with respiratory tract infection, and should be taken into account in future clinical work.
