Abstract Objective To explore the role of 5S management in drug administration of Hospital Pharmacy, in order to ensure patients′ medication safety. Methods The date of drugs utilization in Hospital Pharmacy of Maternity and Child Care Center of Qinhuangdao from August 2014 to July 2016 were selected. Accroding to whether 5S management method adopted dividied into before implementation from August 2014 to July 2015 and after implementation from August 2015 to July 2016. The management methods involved five links, including SEIRI, SEITON, SEISO,SEIKEETSU and SHITSUKE. The speed of drug transfer, drug dispensing error and prescription checking were compared before and after implementation of 5S management. Results After the implementation of 5S management, the speed of drug transfer increased significantly (P < 0.05), drug dispensing errors and drug loss reporting events significantly decreased (P < 0.05), the detection rate of irrational drug using by pharmacists and the rate of qualified prescriptions in clinical departments increased at the same time (P < 0.05). Conclusion The 5S management method can effectively reduce mistakes and accidents in drug dispensing, enhance the detection rate of irrational prescriptions and improve the security of drug using.
