Effect of Furong Tongmai Capsules on Smad7 expression in myocardium of rats with diabetes mellitus |

Abstract Objective To investigate the expression of Furong Tongmai Capsules on Smad7 expression in myocardium of rats with diabetes mellitus. Methods Sixty rats were randomly divided into normal group (10 rats) and model group (50 rats) by random number table method. After the model was made, 40 rats with diabetes mellitus were randomly divided into diabetes mellitus group and low, medium, high dose group of Furong Tongmai Capsules, with 10 rats in each group. Low, medium, high dose group of Furong Tongmai Capsules were given 0.7, 1.4, 2.8 g/kg of Furong Tongmai Capsules by gavage, normal group and diabetes mellitus group were given equal quantity of purified water. After 8 weeks, the myocardium in rats was preserved to make pathological section. The positive expression of blood glucose, blood lipid, Smad7 protein in each group was observed. Results Before treatment and after treatment for 8 weeks, the levels of blood glucose in diabetes mellitus group and low, medium, high dose group of Furong Tongmai Capsules were all higher than those of normal group (P < 0.05), while there were no significant differences of blood glucose within each group before and after treatment (P > 0.05). After treatment for 8 weeks, the levels of total cholesterol, triacylglycerol in diabetes mellitus group and low, medium, high dose group of Furong Tongmai Capsules were all higher than those of normal group (P < 0.05). The Smad7 of normal group showed high positive expression, which of diabetes mellitus group and low, medium, high dose group of Furong Tongmai Capsules was all decreased (P < 0.05); compared with diabetes mellitus group and low dose group of Furong Tongmai Capsules, the Smad7 expression of medium, high dose group of Furong Tongmai Capsules was increased significantly (P < 0.05). Conclusion Furong Tongmai Capsules have the function of increasing the Smad7 expression in myocardium of rats with diabetes mellitus, inhibiting myocardial cell injury.
