Abstract Objective To explore the effect of the geriatric nutrition risk index (GNRI) on clinical prognosis of elderly patients with esophageal cancer undergoing radiotherapy. Methods The clinical data and survival information of 70 elderly patients (ages≥70 years old) with esophageal cancer undergoing radical radiotherapy at Jinhua Municipal Central Hospital from January 2012 to December 2016 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into low nutrition risk group (GNRI≥92) and high nutrition risk group (GNRI<92) according to GNRI. The general data, treatment response and 1-year, 2-year survival rates between the two groups were compared. Results The differences in hemoglobin and C-reactive protein between the two groups were statistically significant differences (all P < 0.05). The 1-year and 2-year survival rates of patients in low nutrition risk group were higher than those patients in high nutrition risk group (P < 0.05), while high GNRI was significantly associated with better clinical outcomes. Multivariate analysis indicated that GNRI, TNM stage, concurrent chemotherapy and treatment response were independent prognostic factors (P < 0.05). Conclusion The patients with high GNRI have good prognosis. GNRI is an effective prognostic index for elderly esophageal cancer patients undergoing radical radiotherapy.
