Research progress on mechanism of gastrodin in the prevention and treatment of ischemic brain injury |

Abstract Gastrodin is a phenolic glycoside compound, which is the main active component of Gastrodiae Rhizoma. It is used in treatment of headache, dizziness, epilepsy, convulsion and other neurological diseases. Cerebral ischemia is one of the most important disabling and fatal diseases in the world. It leads to the loss of oxygen and energy, triggering the release of excitatory amino acids, oxidative stress, inflammation, cell apoptosis and other harmful cascade reactions, aggravating brain tissue damage. Gastrodin can reduce ischemic brain injury by inhibiting excitotoxicity, anti-oxidation, anti-inflammatory, cell apoptosis, maintaining glial cell homeostasis, promoting neurogenesis, and protecting the integrity of blood-brain barrier. It is suggested that gastrodine can regulate the pathophysiological process of ischemic brain injury by multi-target and multi-layer, providing a new idea for the treatment of ischemic brain injury.
