Effectiveness of Edaravone combined with Sodium Valproate in the treatment of post-stroke epilepsy |

Abstract Objective To investigate the efficacy of Edaravone combined with Sodium Valproate in the treatment of post-stroke epilepsy (PSE). Methods The clinical data of 102 patients with PSE who were treated in Tianjin Huanhu Hospital from January 2016 to March 2018 was analyzed retrospectively. According to the different treatment methods, the patients were divided into control group (55 cases) and study group (47 cases). The control group was treated with Sodium Valproate, and the study group was treated with Edaravone on the basis of the control group. The clinical efficacy, seizure frequency, duration, levels of neuron specific enolase (NSE), inflammatory factors and adverse reactions were compared between the two groups. Results The total effective rate of the study group was significantly higher than the control group (P < 0.05). Compared with those before treatment, the number of epileptic seizures decreased and the duration of epileptic seizures shortened in the two groups after treatment. After treatment, the number of epileptic seizures in the study group was less than the control group, and the duration of epileptic seizures was shorter than the control group (P < 0.05). Compared with those before treatment, the levels of serum interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-2 (IL-2) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the two groups were decreased, after treatment, which in the study group were lower than the control group after treatment (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in serum NSE level between the two groups after 3, 6 months and 12 months of treatment (P > 0.05). The serum NSE level in the study group was lower than the control group after 1 month of treatment (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion Edaravone combined with Sodium Valproate in the treatment of PSE can rapidly improve clinical symptoms and reduce the level of NSE with definite curative effect. It can also reduce the level of inflammatory factors without increasing the incidence of adverse reactions.
