Abstract Objective To explore the clinical effect of midline lumbar fusion in the treatment of degenerative lumbar diseases. Methods The clinical data of twenty patients received midline lumbar fusion with degenerative lumbar diseases were selected from May 2016 to May 2018. Operation duration, blood loss and complications of patients were recorded. Oswestry disability index (ODI) and visual analogue scale (VAS) scores for low back pain and leg pain were evaluated the clinical efficacy. Bridwell classification was used to evaluated the fusion. Results All the patients were followed up for at least 12 months, with an average of (17.50±3.53) months. The mean operation time was (172.00±25.73) min and the mean blood loss was (213.50±48.70) mL. VAS scores for low back pain, VAS scores for leg pain and ODI at postoperative 12 months were lower than those at preoperative, and the differences were statistically significant (P = 0.000). According to Bridwell classification, Ⅰ-Ⅱ fusions were observed by radiography for all the patients. No complications such as screw loosening, rupture, cage displacement, and sedimentation occurred during follow-up. Conclusion Midline lumbar fusion is safe and reliable in the treatment of degenerative lumbar diseases with good clinical results.
