Abstract In recent years, clinical research on posterior scleral reinforcement has increased,mainly on the treatment of pathological myopia and its complications. The mechanism of posterior scleral reinforcement is to mechanically reinforce the posterior sclera by using foreign or autologous biomaterials or synthetic materials to prevent scleral deformation. The surgical methods of posterior scleral reinforcement include band, slice and injection. The surgical materials are mainly divided into biological and non-biological. Many new surgical methods and materials are gradually developed. A large number of experimental studies have explained the mechanism of posterior scleral reinforcement,and clinical trials have confirmed its effectiveness from the aspects of posterior scleral staphyloma, macular clefts and macular holes, which lay the foundation for further development.
