Abstract Adequate bowel cleansing is an important preoperative preparation for colonoscopy. With the deepening understanding of the association between intestinal microbiota and intestinal diseases. The influence of bowel cleansing on intestinal microbiota has also become an important factor for healthy people and patients with intestinal diseases to receive colonoscopy. Intestinal lavage fluids can directly wash intestinal microbiota, resulting a significant changes in intestinal microbiota structure in a short time. However, the long-term effects of different intestinal lavage fluids and different bowel cleansing schemes on intestinal microbiota remain unclear. In addition, the application of probiotics might play a potential role in the recovery of intestinal microbiota after bowel cleansing. Therefore, this paper focuses on the short-term and long-term effects of bowel cleansing on intestinal microbiota and discusses mechanism of microbiota recovery after receiving bowel cleansing. Demonstration of this issues and continuing in-depth research will help optimize cleansing solutions strategies.
