Abstract Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a predominant neurotransmitter derived from capsaicin-sensitive sensory nerves, which are widely distributed in the gastrointestinal system. These sensory nerves protect gastric mucosa against damage by sensing various stimuli, and CGRP plays an important role in this process. CGRP protects the gastric mucosa by inhibiting gastric acid secretion, increasing gastric mucosal blood flow, relieving gastrointestinal motility, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic mechanisms. Increasing the release of CGRP is also considered as a potential treatment for gastric diseases. This article focuses on the biological properties of CGRP and the important repairing effect of CGRP on gastric mucosal injury, which is intended to provide new enlightenment for the treatment of gastric ulcer.
