Abstract Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) is dysregulated in many human cancers, including colorectal cancer (CRC), which is the third most common cancer in the world and is associated with poor prognosis; at the same time, some lncRNAs are involved in the development of CRC as tumor suppressor genes or oncogenes and are of great value in diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. LncRNA can enter the human circulatory system in the form of microbubbles, exosomes or protein complexes, forming stable circulating lncRNA. Its concentration level is different between healthy subjects and patients, which can be used as a novel, affordable, lightly accessible, non-invasive detection tool. This article briefly reviews recent advances in the biological properties of circulating lncRNA, focusing on the potential applications of circulating lncRNA as a biomarker for colorectal cancer screening and prognosis monitoring.
