Abstract In recent years, with the changes of lifestyle and diet structure, the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer in China are on the rise. The detection of circulating tumor cells (CTC) in peripheral blood has important significance for the early diagnosis, therapeutic effect monitoring and prognosis assessment of colorectal cancer. CTC refers to the tumor cells that have separated from solid tumor and entered the peripheral blood circulation from the primary tumor or metastatic tumor due to spontaneous or clinical operation. Observing the number changes of CTC has important clinical significance for the individualized diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer. This article aims to review the recent progress of CTC detection technology and clinical research on diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of colorectal cancer.
