Protective effect of snail homogenate enema on ulcerative colitis in rats |

Abstract Objective To investigate whether snail homogenate has protective effect on ulcerative colitis in rats. Methods Rat model of acute Ulcerative Colitis induced by glacial acetic acid. Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats aged 6-7 weeks were randomly divided into model group, blank group, snail homogenate high (1.0 g/kg) and low (0.5 g/kg) dose groups according to random number table, with 10 rats in each group. After the model was completed, the high (1.0 g/kg) and low (0.5 g/kg) dose groups were given snail homogenate continuously for 7 days in the rectum, and the blank group and the model group were given the same volume of normal saline. The main signs and fecal traits of the rats were observed daily, and body weight changes were calculated and fecal scores were performed. At the end of the experiment, the rats were sacrificed and the target colon segment was taken. The coefficient of intestinal weight was calculated and the pathological tissue was detected by HE staining. Results Compared with model group, the symptoms in rats of high-dose group and low-dose group were significantly improved, the degree of weight gain of rats increased significantly (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01), and intestinal weighting coefficient reduced significantly (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01), a significant decrease in fecal scores of high-dose group began on day 4 after administration (P < 0.01). Meanwhile, the scores of inflammatory cell infiltration depth and ulcer depth in the high-dose group were significantly different from those in the model group (P < 0.01). Conclusion Snail homogenate can improve the physical signs, increase body weight, reduce diarrhea, and fight colonic hyperplasia and inflammatory reaction in rats with ulcerative colitis, especially at high doses.
