Abstract Objective To investigate the current situation of empowerment level of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at stable phase and to analyze the influence factors. Methods Totally 192 COPD patients at stable phase accepting treatment in Traditional Chinese Medical Hospital of Guangdong Province from November 2016 to March 2017 were selected to finish self-designed general situation investigation questionnaire and client empowerment scale (CES). Single factor analysis and regression analysis were carried out with PASW 18.0 software. Results CES scores of COPD patients at stable phase were from 44 to 187 points, with the average score of (107.31±31.93) points, which was in or below the medium level. Confidence in disease control, role cognition and participation in medical decision-making were the three dimensions with lowest scores. Regression analysis results showed that age, education background, course of disease, pulmonary function degree and dyspnea degree were influence factors of empowerment level (P < 0.05), and they together could explain 31.4% of the variance variability amount. Conclusion Empowerment level of COPD patients at stable phase is relatively low, and the patients especially lack capability in disease control, role cognition and participation in medical decision-making. Age, education background, course of disease, pulmonary function degree and dyspnea degree are influence factors of empowerment level.
