Abstract Etomidate is a kind of nonbarbiturate intravenous anesthetic. Due to the unique pharmacological characteristics, Etomidate is especially suitable for the shock, heart disease, high blood pressure and the anesthesia of elderly patients. For a long time, the inhibition effect of Etomidate on the adrenocortical function of the patients limits its application scope. In recent years, with the continuous study of Etomidate, it is found that the inhibition effect on the adrenal cortex is reversible, and a large number of clinical trials have confirmed that Etomidate can be used to maintain the normal adrenal function, and the anesthesia for the patients with the operation time less than 3 hours. At the same time, the study of new dosage forms of Etomidate will broaden the clinical indications of Etomidate.
