Abstract Niuhuang Jiedu Tablets (NJT) is an effective and widely used traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in clearing heat and detoxicating, and it is fficially listed in the Chinese Pharmacopeia (2015). As a TCM that contains realgar, its toxicity and safety has always been concerned. This article reviewed the research progress of safety study, toxicity, soluble arsenic and arsenic form of realgar influenced by compatibility of NJT, so as to provide a reference for its further researches and rational clinical uses.
