Abstract The degenerative changes of intervertebral disc cause a variety of lumbar degeneration diseases. These diseases seriously affect the health and quality of life of patients, and also bring bad effects and great economic losses to the society. Therefore, the exploration of the mechanism of disc degeneration has been the focus of research in spinal surgery. This article reviews the studies on pathogenesis of early and middle stage degenerative changes of lumbar intervertebral disc, and the mechanism of improving the degenerative changes of intervertebral disc by Duhuo Jisheng Decoction was also reviewed. These will provide theoretical basis for TCM treatment of lumbar disc degeneration.
