Identification method for the source of frankincense in Huoxue Zhitong Capsules |

Abstract Objective To establish the identification method for the source of frankincense in Huoxue Zhitong Capsules from Jiangxi Baishen Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Nanjing Zhongshan Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., and Nanjing Zhongshan Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.. Methods Microscopy and gas chromatography (GC) were used to investigate Huoxue Zhitong Capsules from 3 manufactures and their processed frankincense. Samples were ultrasonicated with ethanol and analyzed on an HP-INNOWAX capillary column. The column temperature was set at 50℃ for 3 min and then programmed at 15℃/min to 160℃. Results According to microscopic identification, India frankincense was excluded first. Then based on the results of GC identification, octyl acetate instead of α-pinene was found in all samples, which indicated that the manufactures used Ethiopic frankincense rather than Somali frankincense as raw material. Conclusion The method established in this study is accurate, simple and rapid, and can provide reference for the quality control of Chinese patent medicines containing frankincense.
