Application effect of 3D printing technique in the treatment of distal humeral fractures in adults |

Abstract Objective To investigate the effect of 3D printing in the treatment of distal humeral fractures in adults. Methods Sixty cases of distal humeral fractures admitted to Dongguan Kanghua Hospital from March 2014 to March 2017 were selected. According to the random number table method, they were divided into experimental group (n = 30) and control group (n = 30). The control group received conventional surgical treatment, while the experimental group made fracture site models through 3D printing technology and received personalized surgical treatment. Patients in both groups were followed up for 3 months, and the levels of various surgical indicators, elbow function (Cassebaum) score and activity, and postoperative complications were compared between the two groups. Results The operative time and fracture healing time of the experimental group were shorter than those in the control group, and the intraoperative blood loss was less than that in the control group (all P < 0.01). The excellent and good rate of Cassebaum score in the experimental group was higher than that in the control group (all P < 0.01). The activities of postoperative elbow rotation, postrotation, flexion and dorsiflexion in the experimental group were higher than those in the control group (all P < 0.05). In the experimental group, there were no complications such as bone nonunion, fracture malunion and internal fixation deformity, while in the control group, there was one case of postoperative deformity of internal fixation, resulting in fracture malunion. Conclusion The application of 3D printing technology in the treatment of adult distal humerus fracture has obvious effect, which is conducive to the early postoperative recovery of patients, and can significantly improve the elbow joint function and range of motion, and reduce the risk of postoperative complications. It is safe and worthy of clinical application.
