Abstract Cerebral ischemia is often associated with various neurological diseases such as ischemic stroke, Alzheimer disease and vascular dementia. The mechanism of pathological injury after cerebral ischemia is very complicated. Long-term cerebral ischemia can cause progressive neurological dysfunction and cognitive dysfunction. At present, there are limited kinds of drugs for cerebral ischemia, and most of them are still in the experimental stage. MAPK is an important signal pathway in eukaryotic cells, which is regulated by many factors and widely expressed in the central nervous system. Studies have shown that ERK1/2, JNk, p38 of Mark family interacting with the signal pathways like caspase-3, Akt, Nrf2, NF-κB and others are involved in signal transduction of early pathological and physiological mechanisms of cerebral ischemia. Combining these signaling pathways with researches of its related gene and protein, this paper reviews the protective mechanism of Chinese medicine on cerebral ischemic neurons in order to provide a theoretical basis for the clinical treatment of cerebral ischemia and lay the foundation for the development of traditional Chinese medicine which can play the role of brain protection through MAPK.
