Abstract microRNA (miRNA) is a class of short nucleotide sequence with only 20-24 nt, which is widely expressed in multicellular eukaryotes. miRNA regulates the target genes in post-transcriptional level by pairing with complimentary mRNAs. A great deal of recent studies showed that miRNAs play vital roles in many biological processes, such as cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis, they also involved in various cancer regulations. In China, the incidence of gastric and liver cancers increased significantly due to the alterations on the nutrition, environment and genetics following the economic development, which raised more heath concerns. This review focused on the miRNAs identified in these cancers, and addressed the regulatory mechanisms underlying the occurrence and development in the gastric and liver cancers. It would provide better understandings of the importance of miRNAs in these diseases and guide to the further research.
