Abstract Autophagy is a highly conservative self-renewal mechanism of cells, which is a core part of many physiological and pathological processes of the body. Autophagy has a double-edged effect on tumor regulation. It inhibits early tumors and promotes advanced tumors. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has high recurrence rate and poor prognosis, and there is no effective treatment for it currently. Throughout the literatures, many active ingredients of anti-cancer Chinese herbal medicine can increase the autophagy level in HCC cells. Some of them induce autophagic death to inhibit tumor, some of them trigger protective autophagy to support tumor survival and weaken the anti-cancer effects of drugs. In this paper, the research progresses of Chinese herbal medicine active components inducing HCC autophagy are reviewed, which provides new insights for the development of anti-HCC drugs targeting autophagy.
