Research progress on the relief of procedural pain in neonatal intensive care unit by the odor of mother’s milk |

Abstract Newborns possess olfactory function, and multiple studies have confirmed that breast milk olfactory stimulation is an effective non-pharmacological nursing method for relieving procedural pain in newborns. This article analyzes the mechanism of mother’s milk odor stimulation on neonatal procedural pain, and reviews the intervention methods and effects of mother’s milk odor in procedural pain in the neonatal intensive care unit, as well as the effects of mother’s milk odor olfactory stimulation and multi-sensory combined stimulation on alleviating procedural pain in the neonatal intensive care unit. And this article also analyzes the current shortcomings of these studies and proposes future research directions. This article aims to guide nurses in the neonatal intensive care unit to optimize clinical nursing practices for procedural pain, and provide reference for future research.
