Abstract Objective To investigate the clinical effect of Tiaoshen acupuncture in patients with refractory sudden deafness. Methods Patients with refractory sudden deafness treated in Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Wuhu Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Anhui Province from January 2021 to December 2022 were selected as the study objects, and they were divided into control group and treatment group according to random number table method, with 30 cases in each group. The control group was treated with electric nape needles, and the treatment group was treated with Tiaoshen acupuncture (acupoints: bǎihuì, běnshén, nèiguān, shénmén, sānyīnjiāo) on this basis. Both groups were treated once a day, five times a week. Hearing threshold level, Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) scores were performed before treatment, one, two, and four weeks after treatment, respectively, and clinical efficacy was evaluated four weeks after treatment. Results Overall analysis showed that comparison between groups, comparison at time points and interaction of PSQI scores and SAS scores between the two groups were statistically significant (P<0.05). Intra-group comparison: there was statistical significance in PSQI scores of the treatment group at all times (P<0.05). The PSQI score of the control group after two and four weeks of treatment was lower than that before and after one week of treatment, and the PSQI score after four weeks of treatment was lower than that after two weeks of treatment, the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). The SAS scores of the two groups after two and four weeks of treatment were lower than those before and after one week of treatment, and the SAS scores after four weeks of treatment were lower than those after two weeks of treatment, the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Inter-group comparison: After one, two, and four weeks of treatment, PSQI scores in the treatment group were lower than those in the control group, the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). After two and four weeks of treatment, SAS scores in the treatment group were lower than those in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Overall analysis showed that comparison between groups, comparison at time points and interaction of the average hearing threshold value between the two groups were statistically significant (P<0.05). Intra-group comparison: after two and four weeks of treatment, the average hearing threshold value of the two groups was lower than that before and after one week of treatment, and the average hearing threshold value after four weeks of treatment was lower than that after two weeks of treatment, the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Inter-group comparison: after two weeks and four weeks of treatment, the average hearing threshold value in the treatment group was lower than that in the control group, the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in clinical efficacy between the two groups (P>0.05). Conclusion Tiaoshen acupuncture combined with electric nape needles improved the average hearing threshold of patients with refractory sudden deafness more significantly than that of the simple electric nape needles group, which was related to the improvement of sleep quality and anxiety state of patients with Tiaoshen acupuncture, and the two had a synergistic effect.
