Effect of transcranial magnetic stimulation combined with surface electromyography in the treatment of dysphagia after stroke |

Abstract Objective To observe the effect of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) combined with surface electromyography in the treatment of dysphagia after stroke. Methods A total of 86 patients with dysphagia after stroke admitted to Wenzhou Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine Affiliated to Zhejiang Chinese Medical University from September 2021 to November 2022 were selected. The patients were divided into control group and combined group by random number table method, with 43 cases in each group. The control group was treated with TMS, and the combined group was treated with surface electromyography combined with TMS on the basis of the control group. The course of treatment in both groups was one month. The swallowing function, nutritional status (albumin [ALB], prealbumin [PA], total cholesterol [TC]), and quality of life were compared between the two groups before and after treatment. Results After treatment, the swallowing function grading of the two groups were better than those before treatment, and the combined group was better than the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). After treatment, the TC levels of the two groups were lower than those before treatment, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). After treatment, the levels of ALB, PA, and each dimension scores of 36-item short form health survey in the two groups were higher than those before treatment, and the levels of ALB, PA, and scores of health status, life vitality, mental health in the combined group were higher than those in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion TMS combined with surface electromyography is effective in the treatment of dysphagia after stroke, which is worthy of promotion and application.
