Abstract Surgical traumatic stress can initiate the immune inflammatory response and promote the release of a large number of proinflammatory cytokines. Excess production of proinflammatory cytokines can cause further damage to tissues and organs, affecting the prognosis and outcome of surgical patients. In the acute stage of surgical trauma, the inhibition of excessive proinflammatory cytokines is the key to reduce postoperative complications and promote the recovery of patients. Among them, proinflammatory cytokines interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, high mobility group box 1, and C-reactive protein have important effects on surgical traumatic stress. This paper will focus on the above four typical proinflammatory cytokines and explore the potential clinical application value of corresponding cytokine antagonists.
