Abstract Objective To explore the value of the peer mentors model in the training of junior nurses. Methods Eighty-nine Junior nurses with low seniority from January 2020 to December 2021 in Suzhou Science and Technology City Hospital were selected and divided into two groups according to their on-the-job training years. Forty-five nurses in the control group were taught in the conventional shadowing mode, while 44 nurses in the observation group were taught in the peer mentor mode. The comprehensive ability and professional identity of the two groups were observed before and after the training. Results After the training, the theoretical knowledge and practical operation assessment scores of junior nurses of the two groups were higher than those before the training, while those of the observation group were higher than those of the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). After the training, the total scores of the professional identity scale for junior nurses of the two groups were higher than those before the training, while that of the observation group was higher than that of the control group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Conclusion The peer mentors model can effectively improve the theoretical knowledge base and practical operation ability of junior nurses, and has positive significance for enhancing their professional identity.
