Abstract Postherpetic neuralgia is one of the most common complications of herpes zoster and often presents as moderate to severe pain, long-term pain can induce other organ lesions, bring great physical and psychological harm to patients. At present, there are various therapeutic methods for postherpetic neuralgia, and drug therapy is still one of the main therapeutic methods. Western medicine mainly includes calcium channel modulators, antidepressants, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, topical patches, opioids, and other types of drugs; traditional Chinese medicine believes that the occurrence of postherpetic neuralgia is caused by the dysfunction of viscera, and the treatment should start from harmonizing qi and blood and restoring the function of liver and spleen, the treatment aims to relieve pain, improve sleep, and improve quality of life. This paper summarizes the domestic and foreign literature on the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia and introduces the current situation and progress of Chinese and western medicine in the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia.
