Abstract Globally, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fourth most common type of cancer. Most patients present with intrahepatic or distant organ metastases at the time of diagnosis, and their prognosis is poor. The early onset of HCC is insidious, and early diagnosis has long been one of the major research areas in the treatment of liver cancer. As the role of lncRNA and miRNA in HCC has been gradually clarified, the role of exosomes in tumor progression, and diagnosis has gradually received attention from researchers. In recent years, it has been found that exosomes have an important role in the development of HCC and can be applied in the diagnosis and treatment of HCC. This paper reviews the role of exosomes in the progression of HCC, and their development as tumour markers for the diagnosis of HCC.
