Abstract Objective To investigate the effects of six Sigma lean management on growth metabolism and complications of extremely/extra-low birth weight infants. Methods A total of 84 extremely/extra-low birth weight infants admitted to the Department of Neonatology, Nantong Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Jiangsu Province from October 2019 to September 2021 were selected as the study subjects, and they were divided into control group and observation group by random number table method, with 42 cases in each group. The control group received routine care, and the observation group received six Sigma lean management on this basis. The growth metabolism and complication rates of the two groups were observed at birth, 7, 14 days after hospitalization, 14 days after discharge and 30 days after discharge. Results Overall analysis, there were statistically significant differences in body weight and oral intake calorie intergroup, time point, and interaction (P<0.05); further pair-wise comparison, and intra-group comparison: there were statistically significant differences in body weight and oral intake calorie between the two groups at each time point (P<0.05); comparison between groups: the body weight and the level of oral intake calorie in observation group were higher than those in control group at 7 and 14 days in hospital and 14 and 30 days after discharge (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the total incidence of complications between the two groups (P>0.05). Conclusion Six Sigma management can improve the growth metabolism of extremely/extra-low birth weight infants, and its effect on the risk of complications has been demonstrated.
