Abstract Hui Hui Yao Fang is an important literature for the study of ethnic medicine and the discovery of classic prescriptions. In terms of content arrangement, the book contains a wide range of sources and rich contents of prescriptions，and appendices such as preparations, processing, drug research and other contents. In the compilation of the first discussion and then prescription, “according to the classification of disease categories, each category is unified behind the explanation.” In the division of categories, it is the same as the medical disciplines set up by the Northern Song Dynasty Imperial Medical Bureau. This paper makes a horizontal analogy analysis between Hui Hui Yao Fang and the three official prescription books of the Song and Yuan dynasties, Taiping Huimin Heji Ju Fang, Sheng Ji Zonglu and Yu Yao Yuan Fang, and it is found that the process of compiling the book is deeply influenced by the official prescription books. Discussing the compilation process and academic characteristics of Hui Hui Yao Fang, especially the preparation of prescriptions, variety research and other materials in the book，can provide strong evidence for the current literature collation of classic prescriptions of ethnic medicine.
