Abstract Arterial stiffness is recognized as an independent factor for assessing cardiovascular events. A growing number of clinical studies have shown that the assessment of arterial stiffness can predict the risk of cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disease, and chronic kidney disease. However, changes in arterial stiffness are often mistakenly equated with the development of arteriosclerosis or atherosclerosis, and little is known about its pathogenesis, and its rationale and limitations are unknown when applying assessment methods. Therefore, this article aims to review the concept of increased arterial stiffness, describe the research progress of researchers on the mechanism of arterial stiffness in recent years, and evaluate the principles, limitations, and clinical applications of arterial stiffness methods.
