Effect of low-temperature plasma adenoid ablation in the treatment of adenoid hypertrophy with secretory otitis media in children |

Abstract Objective To explore the effect of low-temperature plasma adenoid ablation in the treatment of adenoid hypertrophy with secretory otitis media in children. Methods A total of 76 children with adenoid hypertrophy and secretory otitis media admitted to People’s Hospital of Yixing City of Jiangsu Province from January 2018 to January 2021 were selected and divided into study group and control group according to random number table method, with 38 cases in each group. The study group was treated with low-temperature plasma adenoid ablation, and the control group was treated with endoscopic adenoidectomy. The clinical efficacy, operation time, intraoperative blood loss, length of hospital stay, tinnitus disappearance time, eardrum healing time, hearing recovery time, and middle ear effusion time were compared between the two groups. The scores of disease specific quality of for children with obstructive sleep apnea 18 items survey (OSA-18) were compared between the two groups before and six months after operation, and the incidence of complications between the two groups was recorded. Results The clinical effect of the study group was better than that of the control group (P < 0.05). The duration of operation, hospitalization, disappearance of tinnitus, healing of tympanic membrane, hearing recovery, and middle ear effusion in the study group were shorter than those in the control group, and the amount of intraoperative blood loss was lower than that in the control group (P < 0.05). Six months after operation, OSA-18 scores in both groups were lower than those before operation (P < 0.05). Before and six months after operation, there was no significant difference in OSA-18 scores between the two groups (P > 0.05). There was no significant difference in the total incidence of complications between the two groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion Low-temperature plasma adenoid ablation for the treatment of children with adenoid hypertrophy with secretory otitis media takes a short time, less bleeding, and quick recovery after operation, its therapeutic effect is remarkable, and it is safe and reliable.
